Soho

Overview:

SOHO (SOlar Heliospheric Observatory) is a space-based observatory, viewing and investigating the Sun from its deep core, through its outer atmosphere - the corona - and the domain of the solar wind, out to a distance ten times beyond the Earth's orbit.

Objectives:

SOHO was designed to answer the following three fundamental scientific questions about the Sun:

  • What is the structure and dynamics of the solar interior?
  • Why does the solar corona exist and how is it heated to the extremely high temperature of about 1 000 000° C?
  • Where is the solar wind produced and how is it accelerated?

Experiments:

  • CDS Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer
  • CELIAS Charge, Element, and Isotope Analysis System
  • COSTEP Comprehensive Suprathermal and Energetic Particle Analyzer
  • EIT Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Telescope
  • ERNE Energetic and Relativistic  Nuclei and Electron experiment
  • GOLF Global Oscillations at Low Frequencies
  • LASCO Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph
  • MDI/SOI Michelson Doppler Imager/Solar Oscillations Investigation
  • SUMER Solar Ultraviolett Measurements of Emitted Radiation
  • SWAN Solar Wind Anisotropies
  • UVCS Ultraviolett Coronagraph Spectrometer
  • VIRGO Variability of Solar Irradiance and Gravity Oscillations

Resources

SOHO Data Archive including all measurements from all onboard instruments.

SOHO - LASCO (Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph Experiment) Cme Catalog. Its generated and maintained at the CDAW Data Center by NASA and The Catholic University of America in cooperation with the Naval Research Laboratory.

CDAWEB - Java-based interface-archive for ACE, CRRES, Cluster, DMSP, Equator-S, FAST, Genesis, Geotail, IMAGE, IMP, Interball, OMNI , Pioneer, Polar, SAMPEX, SNOE, SOHO, THEMIS, TIMED, Ulysses, Voyager, Wind and other spacecraft missions.

IAS Data Center is a solar archive allowing searches on the data from the SOHO mission, the TRACE satellite and the CORONAS/SPIRIT instrument.
